Today I was able to see what a church service in Huehuetoca looks like. I woke up today when Ricardo’s son came in and told me “Ready is breakfast”. When I got down to my first Mexican breakfast I found that Claudia had made eggs with ham and small cheese quesadillas. For my drink they brought out milk for me to drink, which I thought would be cold from the refrigerator. To my surprise when I took my first sip I found that it was warm milk and I found it hard to swallow. I found out later that usually Mexicans buy milk in a warm sealed container and then they put it in the fridge after they open it. I think I’ll still take my milk cold though. After breakfast I left the house to help prepare for the church service.
To make sure the church service could happen we had to build the tent where the worship was held. Currently they use a medium sized tent that is built from metal supports and they hang a tarp over the top to block the sun. The problem with setting up this tent in the park is that it’s a dirty process (there’s a lot of dust here). So even though I was dressed in Sunday attire, I had to get my hands a little dirty before church while setting up the tent.
Once the church service began we sang worship songs in Spanish and it was really cool to listen to worship in another language. The Mexicans also danced during one song, which is quite uncommon at my home church. Altogether I enjoyed this worship service and look forward to more of them in the future. Following the end of worship I went to help with the little kids while Andrew stayed at the Bible study portion of the service. While helping with the little ones I was able to learn how they interact with one another as well as their respect for their teachers.
After the church service ended Andrew and I got a little treat. The Carpenters and the two of us got to go to Applebee’s! This was yet another treat from home and I was glad to get to eat there. We then returned home where Casey made us homemade vanilla ice cream and took me over to a fruit shop where I bought some local produce. I’m still feeling a little sick at the end of today, but hopefully tomorrow things will get better. ¡Buenas noches!
