Day 4 (6/5/11)

Today’s most memorable moment was singing in the monastery with the rest of the nuns here at Benedict Inn. Each day in the morning and in the evening the nuns hold a prayer service where they sing the Catholic prayers and hymns. This evening we were able to join them in their singing and observe their ceremony. I found the singing to be very soothing and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The one question I have is why do they go through all of the rituals and traditions to worship God? I guess it’s because they feel He is so holy and worthy of all the extra hassle. Then again I disagree with their form of refined worship as there are many different examples of people shouting to the Lord with great joy and in some cases dancing to express their love for Him.
I feel as though I was caged up during that worship time and not free to express myself as I wanted to. As we stood and sat at the times that the nuns did, I felt like we had to worship in this way or else God would be displeased. But there is also a positive aspect to worshiping this way as you are forced to slow down and really focus on the lyrics you are saying. In this regard I think it lets you see the true goodness of God and realize how great He is. Altogether though, I would enjoy this type of worship once every year or so.
Also today our Mexico team spoke with some missionaries that have served in Mexico for 12 years. They shared with us a brief history of the country, its current religious state, and some common simple phrases that we may hear or say. I found this very interesting and helpful as this information will provide the knowledge we’ll need to learn more about the culture. Throughout this time I felt angry though. I’m thinking now that I was just hungry, but who knows what it was all about. Hopefully this surge of anger doesn’t rise up in me again. I pray that God will help me to keep a peaceful mindset throughout this trip no matter what comes up or any frustrations I may face.
