Day 14 (6/15/11)

Spanish class! That’s the number one thing we had to do today. In today’s class we got the chance to read our homework from yesterday which was an essay in Spanish about where we live. Following this we got to do a few worksheets and then Elli put in a movie called “La Misma Luna”. During this movie we needed to watch and take notes of any words that we didn’t recognize in Spanish. The movie is about a young boy that lives in Mexico and is separated from his mother who crossed illegally into the US. The little boy tries to get back to his mother by being smuggled in, and so far we don’t know much more than that because we ran out of time to watch the whole movie.
Following this class we rode with Enrique, who is a friend of the Carpenter’s, and is kind of like a shuttle for the church members. On the way back with him I realized that I’m starting to remember the roads that we travel on (which is pretty crazy since the roads here are like a bowl of spaghetti sometimes!) and I can also understand him pretty well. Once we got back to the Carpenter’s we were able to eat some good ole sloppy joe’s which was nice. After we were done with these we packed in the truck to head down to what they call the “tianges” here. It’s kind of like a long sprawling flea market made up of small shops inside tents.
Here I bought some delicious treats like pecans and peanuts. I also got my first haircut in Mexico at a hair place nearby which only cost me $11. That’s pretty good since I usually pay $18 in the States. Maybe I can come here for my haircuts from now on. Also, as you can see I told them to cut my hair very short. I’m quite sure I haven’t had my hair this short since I was in kindergarten. I figured since I was in Mexico I might as well change things up a bit and see how it works out. After that we came back and played some more card games. Steve and I then went down to the nearby pharmacy to get some medicine for Andrew and everyone else.
Anyway, that’s pretty much all that’s happened today. I’m about to do some homework for class tomorrow and then after that who knows.
